This franchise was established in 1945 as a charter member of the All-America Football Conference (AAFC) by a coach Paul Brown and a businessman Arthur B. McBride. The team remain affiliated with AAFC from 1946-1949 and won four AAFC Championship titles during that era (in 1946, 1947, 1948, and 1949). The Browns joined the National Football League with the original Baltimore Colts and San Francisco 49ers when AAFC was patched up after 1949 season. The Browns won four NFL Championships, first in their inaugural NFL season in 1950, then in 1954, 1955, and 1964 seasons. In the next thirty years from 1965-1995, the team made fourteen playoffs appearances but could not win another NFL championship or appear in the Super Bowl Game.
In 1995, Art Modell the owner of the franchise publicized the plans to relocate the team to Baltimore, Maryland. But could not do so because of some legal threats from the Cleveland city and fans. A settlement was made in early 1996 as a result of which Modell was permitted to establish a new franchise the Baltimore Ravens while retaining the contracts of all Browns players and employees. The Browns’ all property and belongings, comprising of logos, team name, training facility, and history, were kept protected and the franchise was considered as suspended by the NFL. It was decided that a new team would be formed either by expansion or relocation till 1999. Then in 1998, the Browns were declared as an expansion team and restarted play in 1999. Since then, the team has struggled hard to get success but could have only two winning seasons in the year 2002 and 2007, one playoff appearance in 2002, and no playoff wins.
